FAQ

Who is in the Directory? What is a healthcare provider?

A healthcare provider is an individual health professional licensed to provide healthcare diagnosis and treatment services which may include medication, surgery and medical devices. We use the term broadly throughout the site to refer to any medical or wellness professional, such as: doctor, nurse, physician assistant, mental health professional, social worker, dentist, physical therapist, massage therapist, etc.

Where do the profiles come from?

The LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory is a free, searchable database of all kinds of LGBTQ+ friendly medical professionals who have voluntarily joined our network. Healthcare providers create their own profiles and in order to do so, must affirm their commitment to equality for LGBTQ+ patients. The profiles are not aggregated from other sites and it is not possible to create a profile on behalf of a provider. This directory is a project of GLMA – Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality, the world’s largest association of LGBTQ+ healthcare professionals, so many of the profiles are GLMA members.

Spread the word and help this database grow by encouraging LGBTQ+-friendly doctors, specialists and healthcare providers of every discipline to join us for a more equitable and safe healthcare experience for LGBTQ+ patients.

How do I search for a doctor on this site?

To start your search, use the search bar at the top of the homepage. Enter your ZIP or postal code to see the providers nearest you. Enter a specialty or medical issue to refine the results. You can also search both location and specialty at the same time.

When your search results appear, use the refine search feature to sort by gender, sexual orientation, race & ethnicity, language, approach, patient focus, accepted payment, and distance.

Click on the provider profiles to learn about their practice and find their contact information.

If you don’t see providers in your area, first check to make sure that you have the refine search features turned off, and search again based solely on location. If there are no results nearby, check back again soon. The directory launched summer 2022 and new providers are registering every day.

The LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory is a community listing resource, not a direct medical service. While we can help connect you with healthcare providers, we do not offer hotlines, emergency services, or medical advice and we do not assume responsibility for care received.

I haven’t been to the doctor in a long time, where do I begin?

Primary care physicians and general practitioners are generalists who see patients for common problems and chronic conditions. They can give you a full physical exam and direct you to a specialist if need be. They are a great place to start if you haven’t been to the doctor in a long time.

Type in ‘primary care’ and your ZIP or postal code. Take a look through the LGBTQ+ friendly primary care physicians in your area. Or, type in your ZIP or postal code and just start checking out all the LGBTQ+ friendly medical professionals in your area. You will find healthcare providers of every discipline in the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory and reading about their practices can help point you in the right direction.

Once you’ve selected a healthcare provider, contact their office to book an appointment. Tell them that you’re a new patient and want a general physical. Make a list of your current health issues, medical history, and family medical history before going to the appointment.

I’m a healthcare provider. How do I sign up to be listed?

You can sign up here

Create a profile in minutes and make yourself visible to LGBTQ+ patients who need you. No matter your expertise or how big or small your practice is, we hope you will sign up today. The directory currently accepts healthcare providers based in the United States and Canada.

Do these providers take my insurance?

Each provider profile lists the public and private insurance plans that they accept. For more detailed questions, you’ll need to contact the provider directly. Contact links are available on individual provider profiles.

Do you provide financial assistance?

The LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory is a community listing resource. We do not provide financial assistance, rebates or stipends for medical services. For details on payment, please contact your provider directly.

Are you currently operating in my area? I don’t get any results nearby.

If you don’t see providers in your area, first check to make sure that you have the refine search features turned off, and search again based solely on location. If there are no results nearby, check back again soon. The directory launched summer 2022 and new providers are registering every day.

Provider listings are currently limited to the United States and Canada.

How do you know these providers are LGBTQ+ friendly?

During sign-up, healthcare providers are asked to affirm their commitment to equality for LGBTQ+ patients. These affirmations are based upon the best practices in LGBTQ+ friendly care.

When creating their profiles, healthcare providers are able to enter detailed information about themselves, including accreditations and memberships, approaches, and depth of experience with specific communities.

We encourage people seeking care to review this information and choose with discernment. Profiles are created voluntarily by healthcare providers and are not individually screened or verified at sign-up. The LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory cannot guarantee a positive experience or outcome.
