Alexander Tisman

I have been honored to co-create space with folx of vastly different experiences and intersections of identity. I work with LGB, trans* folx; poly and kinky folx; HIV-impacted folx; young folx living with multiple disabilities; and individuals with histories of chronic homelessness, and/or issues related to substance use. I also have experience working with individuals impacted by anxiety, trauma, discomfort, depression, chronic and persistent mental illness, and a range of neurodiversity. I work from a very narrative framework recognizing the stores we have amalgamated and carry within ourselves over time, imbuing and utilizing harm-reduction, personal values, and strengths-connectedness within our conversations. I taught in the NYC Public school system for four years in Special Education before making as shift to Social Work where I worked in Social Services for many years and have transitioned now to practicing Therapy. In my practice, I center my work on folx with marginalized identities. The intersections of identity that we embody—or any attribute of our personhood—should never be used to push us into feeling “less than” I’m committed to affirming my clients’ experiences and journeys through a person-centered, intersectional, narrative, and trauma-informed approach. I believe that in a context born out of white supremacy, imperialism and many more prejudices, accessing self-care can be a radical act. Therapy can be just one example. I am deeply intersectional as a human philosophy and in my practice. I believe that Black Lives Matter, participate politically and in my practice, and I identify with multiple letters within the LGBTQQAI* endless acronym.
