Candice Moran
I currently work at the University of Kansas Medical Center as a Psychologist who exclusively provides therapeutic services for the students of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, as well as the Residents and Fellows at the University of Kansas Hospital System. I earned my Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Chicago, IL. I completed my Doctoral Internship at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill working in the counseling center and the LGBTQ+ Center. Prior to working at CESS, I spent 9 years working at the University of Central Missouri providing individual, couples, and group therapy to UCM students, and providing campus and community-wide consultation and training on LGBTQIA+ individuals, allyship, and creating inclusive environments as the coordinator of the Safe Zone program. As a queer, nonbinary, AuDHD therapist, my areas of clinical interest include sexuality, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, intersecting identities, social justice, neurodivergence, LGBTQIA+ identities, identity development and transitions (e.g. transition to parenthood), relationship concerns, as well as consultation and outreach. My clinical practice is grounded in an integrative theoretical framework informed by intersectional feminist therapy, trauma-responsive, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), relational-cultural theory (RCT), and family systems theories. I work from trauma-informed, strengths-based, neuro-affirmative perspectives, and I am committed to anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and decolonizing practices. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. According to EMDRIA (EMDR International Association) - EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved. In addition to my clinical work at CESS, I am the co-facilitator for KUMC Prism - LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group advocating for enhanced visibility & belonging, fostering allyship & community, & empowering systemic change at KUMC. I provide educational outreach presentations, consultations, and work with different departments on campus and in the community to improve services and environments for historically excluded individuals and communities both within and outside of KUMC. In my free time you’ll often find me doing an art/craft project, a puzzle, watching a moving, making Lego creations, or going on an adventure with my twin kiddos and my partner. I also enjoy audiobooks, which is absolutely a valid form of reading. I write for the Kansas City queer magazine ROAR - Redefining Outreach, Arts, & Resources, and I'm active in volunteering, activism, and advocacy work on local, statewide, and national levels.
