Caryn Sherbet
Hello and welcome! Therapy is a place to uncover who we are in hopes of moving toward the life we desire. We often assume that we “know ourselves” until some experience calls forth a part of us that we didn’t know existed. These experiences can be scary, overwhelming, and, if handled with care, deliciously transformative. Guiding clients as they encounter their own “opacity” (or that which is psychically Other), is work that I am honored to do. I specialize in helping clients navigate OCD, existential anxiety, and sexual difficulties — and often the intersection of all three. For those grappling with these conditions, the world (including their own brains and bodies) can feel like a terrifying, dangerous place. Clients often come to me in states of chronic avoidance or shut down, earnestly seeking change but unsure of where to start. Using therapies like Internal Family Systems (IFS), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and psychodynamic therapy, I teach clients how to get in touch with their Big Feelings without being swallowed by them. Learning to approach feelings with curiosity instead of avoidance allows us to make meaning of, and ultimately change, deeply held fears and beliefs that limit our lives. We are not meant to hold the enormity of human emotion alone—I’m extremely grateful to walk alongside clients as they confront their own vulnerabilities and work to be transformed by them.
