David Heilman

One of the hardest parts of the therapeutic process is choosing the right therapist for you, and I hope to join you on your journey towards greater self-understanding, compassion, and insight. Many people come to therapy after experiencing emotional distress that has led them to feel overwhelmed and as though they have lost direction in, and control of, their life. In a safe and non-judgmental space, I work collaboratively with my clients to explore ways in which they can effectively regain a sense of empowerment, meaning, and control in their lives. Central to my work is the concept that our relationship, and the authentic exploration of that relationship, will better help you make meaning out of other important relationships. While this work can be challenging, it leads to greater emotional and interpersonal fulfillment, elevation of mood, and increased freedom from anxiety. While I have enjoyed working effectively with a wide variety of individuals, I specialize in LGBTQ affirmative therapy, ADHD, anxiety, depression, chronic shame, couples/relationship challenges, and open relationships. I am currently seeing new clients in my Dupont Circle office, and I look forward to answering any of your questions.
