Sharla Cook
I am an artist and Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist licensed in OH and CT (NY licensure pending). I have eyes trained to find beauty in all the places where hope feels lost. My undergraduate degree is in studio art, and I love to incorporate expressive interventions with my clients to process what is coming up. I have personally experienced the healing power of art in the unearthing of trauma, and I encourage others to dig into themselves in that same vulnerable way. Some experiences defy what we can express through constructed language. I support those who are coping with the wide-ranging impact of trauma on their lives, including a specialization in deconstructing religious/cultic experiences, medical, and sexual traumas. A great many of us have been harmed by the way our various faith bodies have handled issues surrounding the LGBTQ+ community, regardless of religious background. The impact of that trauma, interwoven throughout your development and imprinted into your thinking, is only just beginning to be understood in the therapy world and is not talked about enough. Family estrangement, relational wounds, and early attachment ruptures are other areas in which I have a great deal of experience. I work from a postmodern, systemic approach, interweaving modalities from narrative therapy, EMDR, and expressive interventions such as sand tray and visual arts. I am certified through Fluence to provide Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy and I’m partnered with Journey Clinical to be able to offer it to those for whom it is clinically indicated. I’m excited that you took this first step, and I’m eager to push further with gentle curiosity. Let’s get you back into role of creating your narrative, and aligned with who you truly are inside. Even if you’re not yet sure who that is!
