Suzanna Chen
I am a Board-Certified psychiatrist and psychotherapist in a boutique private practice serving adults throughout New York. My approach is warm, collaborative, and individualized, integrating psychodynamic therapy, CBT (including Exposure and Response Prevention and Habit Reversal Training), psychoanalysis, and thoughtful medication management when appropriate (not as a requirement, but as one of many treatment options). I tailor treatment to each person's goals, symptoms, preferences, and stage of life. I strive to provide an affirming, culturally responsive space. I welcome people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, relationship structures, and life paths, including those who are questioning, exploring identity, or navigating family, cultural, or religious challenges. My practice is sex-positive, kink-affirming, and welcoming of individuals in consensually non-monogamous relationships. I view diversity in identity, relationships, and sexuality as a normal part of the human experience rather than something to be pathologized. In addition to psychotherapy, I am pursuing advanced specialized training in psychoanalysis at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. For those interested, psychoanalysis offers an opportunity to explore the deeper patterns, relationships, and unconscious processes that shape one's emotional life. It can be particularly meaningful for individuals who feel stuck, who have found other therapies only partially helpful, or who are seeking a deeper understanding of themselves beyond symptom relief. My clinical interests include anxiety, OCD, depression, identity development, relationship concerns, perfectionism, work stress, people-pleasing, intergenerational family dynamics, narcissistic family systems, women's mental health, and perinatal mental health. I also enjoy working with healthcare professionals, high-achieving individuals, multicultural and interracial relationships, and those navigating questions of culture, identity, and belonging. Above all, I believe therapy is most effective when you feel genuinely seen, respected, and understood. My goal is to create a thoughtful, compassionate, and affirming space where you can bring your whole self, develop greater self-understanding, and build a life that feels more authentic, meaningful, and fulfilling.
