Z. Avery
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker providing online therapy to adolescents (13+) and adults in Oklahoma, Florida, South Carolina, and Idaho. As a queer therapist, I provide affirming care for people across diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, relationships, bodies, backgrounds, and ways of being. I approach mental health from a whole-person perspective. Our emotional well-being can be shaped by relationships, physical health, identity, family and community, culture, safety, environment, access to resources, and the larger systems around us. For 2SLGBTQIA+ people, this can also include minority stress, discrimination, rejection, stigma, concealment, questions of belonging, and experiences within healthcare or other institutions. Therapy with me does not require separating identity from mental health or treating identity as something that needs to be explained, defended, or changed. Instead, we can make room for the complexity of your experiences while exploring what is causing distress and what supports greater well-being. You also do not have to make your identity the focus of therapy simply because you are 2SLGBTQIA+. Sometimes it matters deeply to the work. Sometimes it does not. We can follow what matters to you. My approach is humanistic, person-centered, evidence-based, trauma-informed, and integrative. Depending on your needs, our work may incorporate cognitive and behavioral strategies, acceptance and values-based approaches, mindfulness, self-compassion, emotional regulation, trauma-focused interventions, and mind-body practices. We will pay attention to what actually helps you, build on what works, and adjust when something does not fit. I believe therapy can be about more than symptom reduction. It can also support authenticity, self-understanding, resilience, connection, psychological flexibility, meaning, and greater freedom to build a life that reflects who you are and what matters to you.
